Ven Pongal recipe – How to make ven pongal

Ven pongal is a typical breakfast recipe in many south Indian families. It is combination of rice and moong dal with some seasoning.It is fulfilling recipe, to have a tasty pongal we should add generous ghee that enhances the taste.It is easy to cook and does not need much ingredients.

Many south Indian temples offer ven pongal as prasadam but that recipe will be little different.During my college hostel days every Friday morning the breakfast will be ven pongal.It was the same for 4 years. And i love to have ven pongal.A perfect side up for ven pongal will be coconut chutney,sambar and medu vada. Many restaurants offers this combo only

I have shown you step by step pictorial recipe.Now lets look into ven pongal recipe.

Pre requirement:

Soak 1 cup of rice in water for 30 min


  • One cup rice
  • Half cup moong dal
  • Ghee
  • Ginger
  • Cumin seeds
  • Pepper
  • Green chilli
  • Curry leaves
  • Cashew nut

  1. Add half cup of moong dal in pan and saute well for 2 min
  2. Let it cool and rinse it well
  3. Add the washed moong dal to pressure cooker and one cup of soaked and rinsed rice to the cooker
  4. Add 5 cups of water(1:5 ratio) one cup rice-5 cups of water
  5. Add salt as required then cover the cooker and cook for 4 whistle
  6. Once the pressure releases mix the pongal well
  7. For seasoning add 2-3 spoon of ghee to a pan
  8. Add 5-6 cashew nut and saute well and add it to pongal
  9. Again add 2 spoon of ghee and add cumin seeds,pepper,green chilli and curry leaves and ginger and saute well
  10. Add it to the pongal and give a good mix
  11. Your ven pongal is ready serve it with coconut chutney,sambar and medu vada

Pictorial recipe:

Saute half cup of moong dal for 2 min

Add washed moong dal and rice in pressure cooker and add water and salt as required

Cook for 5 whistle

Rice and moong dal is cooked well

For seasoning add all the ingredients(cashew nut,cumin seeds,pepper,curry leave,ginger,green chilli) in oil and saute well

Add it to pongal and mix well

Ven pongal is ready

Serve it hot with coconut chutney,sambar and medu vada
