Tiffin Sambar recipe- Hotel style idli dosa sambar

Tiffin sambar – easy and tasty sambar for idli, dosa ,pongal and many tiffin items.This can also be used in sambar vada. This tiffin sambar is littler different from regular sambar recipe for rice. It tastes too good. We will be preparing a sambar powder that can be prepared as a batch and you can store it for later use ,but i would suggest you to grind fresh powder each time to get the real taste.

The real taste of tiffin sambar is because of two things, the freshly grind sambar masala and the whole shallots we add. It gives the exact taste of hotel sambar. In many south Indian vegetarian hotels the taste of tiffin sambar will be too good.You guys should definitely try out this recipe.

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • Carrot(veggie of your choice)
  • Channa dal
  • Coriander seeds,cumin seeds
  • Red chilli
  • Fenugreek seeds
  • Curry leaves,coriander leaves
  • Onion
  • Tomato
  • Mustard seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt and oil

  1. Add 1 cup of washed toor dal in a pressure cooker
  2. Add 2 chopped carrots(you can add pumpkin or any veggies of your choice)
  3. Add 2 cups of water and pinch of salt and cook for 4-5 whistles
  4. For sambar powder add 1/2 tsp of channa dal in a pan and add 4 red chilli and dry roast
  5. Add 1 tsp of coriander seeds ,1/2 tsp of cumin seeds,1/2 tsp of fenugreek and saute for 2 min
  6. Take them in a plate and let it cool completely and then grind into fine powder so the sambar powder is ready
  7. Heat some oil in a pan add mustard seeds,curry leaves,red chilli
  8. Add 6 shallots (do not cut into halves add whole shallot)
  9. Add 1 small chopped tomato
  10. Cook them well and cooked dal mix
  11. Add the freshly grind sambar powder and turmeric powder
  12. Cook for 5 min at last garnish with some coriander leaves
  13. Serve it hot with tiffin

Add cumin seeds,fenugreek,channa dal

Let it cool

Grind it to powder

Heat oil in pan add mustard seeds,curry leaves,red chilli

Add 5-6 shallots

Add chopped tomato

Once pressure releases from cooker toor dal is ready

Add toor dal to the seasoning

Add grind sambar powder

Garnish with coriander leaves

Serve it hot
