Puliyodharai Recipe / Tamarind rice

Puliyodharai is a very famous south Indian variety rice.It is offered as prasadam in many temples.For this we need to prepare pulikacchal and we can make this in a huge batch and store it for later use. And we need cup of steamed rice .Once we mix rice and pulikacchal puliyodharai is ready.It is easy to make and when we are travelling or in need of quick lunch we can make this puliyodharai.

The real taste of puliyodharai is because of puliyodharai powder we make using 8 ingredients .It is freshly prepared masala powder which gives very nice aroma and taste.You should add generous oil and use gingelly oil which is best suited for this recipe.If you like peanuts then add more peanuts because i love to have that way.

  • 1 cup rice

  1. Soak small ball sized tamarind in water for 15 min and extract the juice
  2. For Puliyodharai powder heat a pan and add 1 tsp of channa dal, and 1 tsp of urud dal and saute well
  3. Add 1 tsp of coriander seeds, 4-5 red chillies,1 tsp of pepper,1 tsp of fenugreek and pinch of asafoetida
  4. Saute well it gives nice aroma then let it cool
  5. Saute 1 tsp of sesame seeds and add to the spices and cool the completely and grind them into fine powder
  6. Heat 3 spoon of gingelly oil in a pan and add 1 tsp of mustard seeds,channa dal and urud dal
  7. Add 2 red chilli, and some curry leaves
  8. Add handful of peanuts,pinch of turmeric and asafoetida
  9. Then add the tamarind juice and let it boil well
  10. After 5 min add 3 spoon of puliyodharai powder and cook well
  11. Once it becomes thick consistency then pulikacchal is ready
  12. To one cup of rice add 2 spoon of pulikacchal and required salt and mix well
  13. Your super tasty puliyodharai is ready

Pictorial recipe:

Soak tamarind in water for 15 min and extract juice

Saute channa dal and urud dal

Add coriander seeds,pepper,fenugreek

Then add 4-5 red chilli

Cool it completely

Saute 1 tsp of sesame seeds

Add it to the rest and cool

Grind to fine powder

Heat oil and mustard seeds

Add channa dal,urud dal,red chilli,curry leaves

Handful of peanut is added

Add pinch of turmeric and salt

Add tamarind juice

2-3 spoon of fresh grind powder

Cook for 10 min

Perfect consistency

Take 1 cup of rice and add the pulikacchal and salt as required

Mix well

Perfect Puliyodharai is ready
